The New Life was originally a print journal published by Reverend Dr. Frank Uhlir. Upon his death in 1980, Dr. Uhlir's widow continued publishing The New Life until her retirement, then bestowed the editing of the journal (along with many unpublished Uhlir writings) to Douglas Gander, a devoted student of Dr. Uhlir's with a heart for making Dr. Uhlir's legacy of insight and wisdom available to a wider audience. Later issues of The New Life contain a compilation of Articles by Dr Uhlir and other related articles gleaned from a variety of sources over the years. These issues can be found on the site, along with a growing collection of the reproduced works of Dr. Uhlir and other pertinent articles.
Frank Uhlir
The Reverend Dr. Frank Uhlir, born in Moravia in 1900. Growing up as an agnostic in a devout Roman Catholic family, Dr. Uhlir eventually became a prominent Czechoslovakian politician. In 1936 he was imprisoned by the Nazis. After escaping with the help of the underground, he went to Poland where he had a life changing experience of God. He returned to Czechoslovakian political arena, but was again imprisoned in 1948 this time by the Soviets. Once again the underground movement helped him to escape.

In 1956. he was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church of Canada, and eventually he became a professor at Kings University in Halifax. In 1967 Dr. Uhlir retired and with his wife Joan founded Temple Pastures, a retreat centre near Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. |
Dr. Uhlir's story, including the founding of Temple Pastures, is told in his book The Call of the Cross [from Politics to Priesthood - its working title]. He was a devoted and inspired man who was called to teach others about the way of Christ. He died in 1980 leaving his wife Joan to carry on the ministry of the Mission.
From 1986 until recently, Temple Pastures was operated under the auspices of the Anglican Church of Canada, Diocese of Ottawa. Its inherited goal was to continue being a trans-denominational Mission based in the Gospel of Christ to welcome and guide all who desire to further their eternal life in God, and His kingdom.

About the Editor
Rev. Dr. Uhlir's first language was Czech, not English. Although he spoke clearly and was understood by students and those he counselled, some wording in the publication "The New Life" (and other writings of his included here) has been slightly edited for clarification of his intended meaning.
The editor of Frank Uhlir's newsletters and articles, Douglas Gander, was a student of Rev.Dr. Uhlir. Growing up in a Protestant church family but later alienated by its wandering focus and direction, he left home after high school and traveled extensively, searching for "the Way, the Truth, and the Life". At a spiritual low point, he found a Gideon's Bible in a hotel room and was visited and inspired by God's Spirit to seek new life in Him, through Jesus Christ and ongoing renewal from above, by God's grace. Upon his return to Canada he became a student of Dr. Uhlir and found in him a beloved mentor. He currently lives in rural Ontario with his wife Susan, where they operate The WORDsmith -- "Where there's the Word, there's the Way" -- a small printing and publishing shop. They are now members of the Orthodox Church in America, attending Annunciation Cathedral in Ottawa, and they support St. Anthony Hermitage near Westport.
